Morgan Freeman did an interview with Chris Wallace of 60 Minutes fame not too long ago. Chris asked Morgan if he liked Black History Month. Morgan’s reply shocked Chris.
Now for those of you who don’t know, Morgan Freeman, an A List actor is black or “African-American” and Chris Wallace an A List television news man is white. (Why is there no such thing as a “White-American?)
Morgan asked Chris as part of his response to the question, if Chris wanted to have a White History month. Chris was visibly and verbally taken aback by this and at first did not seem to answer. The answer that finally came out of his mouth was no.
No doubt Chris thought that he and other liberals were doing blacks in this country a favor by giving us a whole month to ourselves for celebration of history.
This was evidenced by a “conversation” I had with a white woman on Facebook. She said we, blacks, should stop whining and crying about it because we had a month all to ourselves.
My point is this. Why do we have a month? Simply to placate us? The answer to that is a big fat YES. Many blacks today are becoming increasingly annoyed with Black History Month. It basically is saying our history is separate and not equal to the rest of American and world history.
Blacks helped to build this nation as much as any other ethnic peoples. Why is it then we should accept the fact that black history is not really taught the rest of the year. Forget the fact that black history month is also relegated to the shortest month of the year.
Yet blacks are supposed to be happy with this. Whatever happened to just plain American History. Are blacks not a part of the American experience? Yes we are. We are a huge part.
Chris Wallace asked Morgan about racism. He asked how would we deal with racism if we did not talk about race and color. Morgan replied simply “stop talking about it.”
I agree with Morgan. I am not a black-American. I am a human male and an American. Period. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr said he foresaw a day when a man was judged solely by the content of his character, not by the color of his skin.
We should do away with black history month and all those other ethnic special awards you see on TV as well. We should have a long month of American History celebration. We should stop saying I am a black man or a white man or an Latino man or anything else that would delineate our “race” for we are all of the same race. The Human Race.
